Ye olde notebook:
n Some WVU fans, on the eve of one against BYU on Saturday in Landover, Maryland, have been concerned about a neutral-site football game set for 2020.
As our Mike Casazza first reported at the end of July, a matchup between Florida State and West Virginia is in the works for 2020 in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta.
Yet this week a report surfaced that said Georgia and Virginia could meet at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium that year.
"Virginia associate athletic director Jon Oliver signed a term sheet to play in the game on Sept. 7, 2020, according to a document obtained by the Macon Telegraph in an open records request in the state of Virginia," reads the report.
Gary Stokan, CEO and president of Peach Bowl, Inc., which runs the game, subsequently told the Athens Banner-Herald his group does not have an agreement.
So, um, huh?
Well, apparently there could be two Chick-fil-A Kickoff Games that year, although neither pact has been cemented yet. Georgia and Virginia could meet on Labor Day.
And when reached on Thursday, WVU athletic director Shane Lyons said he just saw FSU AD Stan Wilcox in Dallas and indicated their schools' 2020 game is a "go."
"We're just waiting on the paperwork," Lyons said.
n While Lyons was on the line, he was asked about the expected attendance for Saturday's BYU-WVU game at FedExField.
He estimated "30,000 to 35,000," but said with expected good weather "there may be a good walk-up" crowd.
Associate athletic director Matt Wells, meanwhile, said WVU would account for approximately 10,000 in attendance "through our office when you include band, players' families, travel party and tickets sold."
n Of course, Marshall, meanwhile, is hosting a big game on Saturday when No. 3 Louisville hits Huntington.
When reached Thursday, MU assistant AD for media relations Jason Corriher said 2,500 tickets were sold via Louisville and that "roughly 1,000 tickets" were all that's remaining for the matchup.
Joan C. Edwards Stadium holds 38,016. So on this coming Saturday, could MU outdraw WVU's neutral-site game?
It will be close.
n And finally ...
USA Today writer Nicole Auerbach wrote an interesting story on UCLA's defense - especially if you're seeking insight into BYU's offense.
Auerbach quoted UCLA defensive line coach Angus McClure on how the Bruins got past BYU 17-14 in Provo.
"BYU has an aggressive blocking style, and they change up their blocking schemes," McClure said. "They do zone schemes, man schemes - they also do a lot of cutting. They try to cut and get players on the ground.
"Preparing for someone like BYU, there are a lot of different schemes you have to be prepared for."
UCLA, though, stopped BYU's running game cold.
"Our front seven played with a lot of synergy," McClure said. "They played gap assignments extremely well. I think we're starting to build a lot of trust."
Here's the kicker though: UCLA used nine defensive linemen in that game. A lot of UCLA's linemen had 30 to 40 reps "which is optimal because those guys can tire out quickly," McClure said.
It's something to keep an eye on Saturday, anyway, when the Mountaineers meet the Cougars.
